Spy Photos: 2023 Honda Civic Type R Caught Testing in Rain

Recently, we captured Honda on the road testing the exciting, new Civic Type R prototype wearing its red “R” with pride. Literally wearing it everywhere—the camouflage is composed of countless R letters on it, and all of them are red.

The new model is a compact class hatchback with a sporty look with power to match its edgy design. The next generation of the Civic Type R will be launched in 2022 as an MY2023 vehicle. The first deliveries should happen next summer.

The Civic Type R still comes with large rims for its size, perfect for a Nitto NT01 or NT555 G2 ultra high performance tire. The red brake calipers appear to be Brembo units.

Honda kept the three-tailpipe configuration for the newest model, but with differences. The central exhaust is significantly larger than its twin siblings, and it is still mounted in the center of the rear bumper.

In the rear, the diffuser fins peek through the camouflage, but the most interesting part of the new aero design is the rear wing, which is significantly larger than on any Civic Type R so far.

Honda is set to offer the upcoming Civic Type R with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine expected to make about 320 horsepower and more than 300 pound-feet of torque.

Fans of the manual transmission should be happy, as the Japanese company will still offer it as standard. There is no word on a dual-clutch yet, so the six-speed manual might be the only option.
